I THINK I SAW A WOLF. ARE THERE WOLVES IN IOWA?
Yes, gray wolves are native to Iowa, however they are on the endangered species list here. You may have seen a wolf, but chances are what you saw was a coyote, especially if it was in an urban or town setting where many coyotes have adapted to live alongside us. Coyotes look similar to wolves but are smaller and less bulky. They will most likely be seen at dawn or dusk. They may have a bad reputation but the majority of their diet is rodents and rabbits, making them a friend to suburban gardeners. Both wolves and coyotes are shy and avoid contact with humans; attacks on humans and pets are extremely rare and usually occur where humans have been encouraging interaction through feeding and attempting to keep them as pets.
ARE THERE FOXES IN TOWNS?
Yes, and as their habitat shrinks, foxes are moving into our backyards more and more. Or rather, we are moving into theirs. Like coyotes, foxes mainly live on rodents and rabbits, and as such, can be very useful to gardeners.
